A Glance Through Its History

The origination and the creation of the city have been widely contradicted by the historians. According to few sources the city was established by Raja Bhoj. The king set up a dam near present-day Bhopal named 'Pal' and henceforth city was called Bhojpal. But later it got abbreviated as Bhopal. From other resources and studies it was said as the city was named after a king Bhupala and originally called as Bhupal. Although neither of these theories are proven fact.

The medieval history of India suggests Nawab Dost Mohammad Khan annexed the state of Bhopal and ruled for long. The specialty of the city lies in being the only city ruled successfully by four women rulers. The era of Begums that began in 1819 with the accession of Qudsia Begum continued till 1926, when her great great grand daughter Sultan Jahan Begum abdicated in favour of her son, Hamidullah Khan. The post independence history shows more twists and turns. In 1949 Bhopal became an integrated part of India and given statehood. Laxmi Narayan Temple

One of the famous and astonishing architecture that stands tall at the top of Arera Hills has been attracting pilgrims and tourists for its dexterity and religious values. The temple of Goddess Laxmi and God Narayana, sees thousands of visitors each day. Also known as Birla Mandir, Laxmi Narayan Temple has an attached Museum where you can find rare collection of sculptures from Sehore,Raisen, Mandsaur and Shahdol districts of Madhya Pradesh. Timing of museum is from 9am to 5pm every day except Mondays.

Manuabhan Ki Tekri

Manua Bhan Ki Tekri situated atop a hill is a famous pilgrimage spot for Jain devotees.The place is known for its exquisite architecture and panoramic views of the city. Also known as Mahaveer Giri, the tekri houses the footwear of Jain saint Shri Jindutta Sureshwarji, Acharya Manutung, and Maharaj Shri Vijay Suriji along with an idol of Shri Man Bhadarji.On the event of Kartik Purnima, a big fare is held in the temple every year.

Gohar Mahal

Gohar Mahal is a beautiful and popular monument built by Begum Qudisiya. The fine looking palace is situated near Upper Lake and is a beautiful fusion of the local Hindu and Islamic architecture. The sprawling palace built in 1820 is still intact and draws plenty of visitors.

Jama Masjid

The charisma of this monument built in 1837 is never ending. The credit for building Jama Masjid in Bhopal goes to Begum Qudisiya. Taj-Ul-Masjid

The name suggests its importance and the prestige. Taj-Ul-Masjid refers to the 'Crown of Mosques' dates bacjk to Mughal era. Built by Nawab Shahjehan Begum it is one of the largest mosques in Asia. Also there are imposing double stored gate-way with 4 recessed archways and 9 imposing cusped multiple openings in the main prayer hall. The Monument also serves as Madarsa or Islamic School and imparts education to the students. A three-day Ijtima congregation held here annually draws people from all over the country.

Moti Masjid

Build by Begum Sikandar Jehan in 1860 it resembles much with famous Jama Masjid of Delhi. You will be astonished by the carvings engraved in the walls and ceilings of the mosque. The historical mosque is revered by thousand of Muslim devotees.

Government Archeological Museum

This museum contains sculptures and paintings from various parts of Madhya Pradesh. Here you can find exquisite collections of paintings including copies Bagh cave painting and the statues of Lakshmi and Buddha. Other important artifacts includes images of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Explore the artistic engraved stone statues that make oneself spellbound. The museum remains open from 10 am to 5 pm except on Mondays and Government holidays.

Khatlapura Temple

An ancient Lord Rama temple, built in 19th century is a living example of the heights of Indian Art in past. The temple attracts plenty of devotees specially in the Dol Gyaras annual festival which is celebrated every year in the temple premises.

Railways

Bhopal has two major railway stations; one is the Bhopal Junction which can be considered as the Old Bhopal and another being Habibganj or New Bhopal. Both the stations are inside the city and frequent public transport can be availed to reach up to any part of the city. The stations are almost 7-8 km apart from each other. You can reach up to Bhopal from any part of the country through Indian Railway as the city is connected to every part of the nation.
