A Glance Through Its History
The origination and the creation of the city have been widely contradicted by the historians. According to few sources the city was established by Raja Bhoj. The king set up a dam near present-day Bhopal named 'Pal' and henceforth city was called Bhojpal. But later it got abbreviated as Bhopal. From other resources and studies it was said as the city was named after a king Bhupala and originally called as Bhupal. Although neither of these theories are proven fact.
The medieval history of India suggests Nawab Dost Mohammad Khan annexed the state of Bhopal and ruled for long. The specialty of the city lies in being the only city ruled successfully by four women rulers. The era of Begums that began in 1819 with the accession of Qudsia Begum continued till 1926, when her great great grand daughter Sultan Jahan Begum abdicated in favour of her son, Hamidullah Khan. The post independence history shows more twists and turns. In 1949 Bhopal became an integrated part of India and given statehood. Although later it was merged with Madhya Pradesh and declared as Capital of the state. To know about history of Bhopal, Click here
