Gohar Mahal in Bhopal

Gohar Mahal PalaceIn 1819 the history of Bhopal took a dramatic turn and started an era of Queens. After the assassination of her husband,Queen Qudisiya shouldered the responsibility of the princely state of Bhopal

She was an unprejudiced woman ruler in 19th century who rose to power. She came out and scrapped the conventional idea that women should be remain behind the veil and started working on women empowerment. 

She was an efficient ruler and an unbiased queen. She is said to be very popular amongst her subject. She ensured better facilities for the people and also emphasized on the education. She is known for her contribution towards the women empowerment. She even decided to pass her thrown to her daughter Begum Sikandar and prepared her this great responsibility.

She was a great admirer of art, architecture and was representative of communal harmony. In her regime she filled higher officials post by recruiting Hindus and established a prosperous and peaceful Bhopal. She built many religious monument for the people. The most remarkable one are the Jama Masjid and Gohar Mahal. She made Gohar Mahal in 1860 and resided in the palace in later half of her life.

Gohar Mahal situated at the banks of the beautiful Upper lake is unique and with appealing interior and exterior decorations. It is great example of fusion of Indo-Islamic architecture. The art, dexterity shows the impact of Hindu and Islamic culture in a wonderful proportion. The wonderful art and equally intensified architectural beauty reflects the taste of Bhopal's first queen.
