If one wishes to travel more of history than one should definitely spare the time out to see and make an excursion to a place called Bhimbetka which is an archaeological treasure house. It lies 46 kms south of Bhopal. The rocky terrain of dense forest and craggy cliffs has over 600 shelters belonging to the Neolithic age. 

They had a vivid, panoramic detail, painting in over 500 caves depicting the lives of pre-historic cave dwellers. This invaluable chronicle on the history of man, should not be missed. You can enjoy the paintings depicting everyday events of our ancestors like scenes of hunting, dancing, horse and elephant riding, household scenes, honey collection, animal fighting scenes etc.

The Bhimbetka rock shelters are archaeological World Heritage site located in Raisen District near Bhopal. The Bhimbetka shelters shows the earliest traces of human life in India and also exhibits traces of dance from prehistoric times; some suggest that at least some of these shelters were inhabited by hominids like homo erectus more than 100,000 years ago. Analysts also say that the Stone Age rock paintings found among the Bhimbetka rock shelters are around 30,000 years old.


As mentioned above that the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetaka lie in the Raisen District near Bhopal, in fact south of Bhopal at the southern edge of the Vindhyachal hills. South of these rock shelters are successive ranges of the Satpura hills. The whole area is covered by thick vegetation and also abundant with natural resources in its perennial water supplies, natural shelters and rich forest flora and fauna.

The rock shelters and caves of this place no doubt have number of interesting paintings which depict the lives and times of the people who lived in the caves, including scenes of childbirth, communal dancing and drinking, and religious rites and burials, as well as the natural environment around them. The paintings are beautiful and depict lot of things.


Samasgarh is situated 22 kilometer away from Bhopal. This place was discovered 70 years ago by a jain Muni.Hundred of idols of Jain tearthankars can be seen there.

Manua Bhan Ki Tekri

Manua Bhan Ki Tekri is situated at Gwalior road on the top of the hill nearly 7 kms away from Bhopal. It is a Jain temple, a pilgrimage and faith of Jain devotees. On the tekri the Jain saint Maharaj Shri Vijay Suriji, Shri Jindutta Sureshwarji and Acharya Manutung’s footwears are kept and also a idol of Shri Man Bhadarji has been installed. 

On the Simha Gate of the temple is an old manuscript carved on the stone, the language in which it has been written is still to be deciphered. It is also said to be the Sadhana Sthali of Oswal Dynasty. A big fare is also held every year here on Kartik Purnima.

Bharat Dham

Bharat Dham is hill situated approximate 8 kms from Bhopal ans is known as the highest peak in Bhopal. The place is famous for the sculptures of great Indian personalities along with their brief biographies. A Jain temple named Manuabhan Ki Tekri lies on the Bharat Dham with the idol of Adhishtayak Dev Shri Man Bhadarji is a pilgrimage and faith of Jain devotees. The Tekri is adorned with the footprints of Jain saints Shri Vijay Suriji, Shri Jinndutt Sureshwarji and Acharya Mantung.

Islam Nagar

Islam Nagar is almost 11km away on Bhopal-Berasia Road. It has synthesis of Hindu and Islamic decorative art developed by Afghan ruler Dost Mohammed Khan. It is a panchayat village in Bhopal. The place was originally known as Jagadishpur, and was founded by the local Rajput chieftains. In the early 18th century, the place was captured and renamed to Islamnagar ("city of Islam") by Dost Mohammad Khan, the founder of the Bhopal princely state. Several members of the royal family of Bhopal, including Shah Jahan Begum, were born in Islamnagar. Some of the monuments are also present here like

Islamnagar fort : The ruins of Islamnagar fort can be found running through the farmlands of Islamnagar. Chaman Mahal: Chaman Mahal also known as Garden palace is a red sandstone structure built by Dost Mohammad Khan. It is surrounded by gardens and fountains, and is ornamented with floral motifs.

Rani Mahal:  Rani Mahal also known as Queen palace is a double-storey zenana complex (female residence).
